Why did Della feel that a gift bought with only $1.87 wasn’t good enough for Jim?

OMG! Okay, I love this book. Anyway, Della has a thing for hair clips and Jim want a new watch clasp or whatever. So when Della sees the hair clips and recognizes that the gift she was going to get for Jim was cheap she had her hair cut to get a more expensive watch clasp for Jim, but as you know in the end Della cuts her hair to get Jim's gift and Jim sells his his watch to get Della's gift. So in the end it was pointless for both of them to give up their most prized possesions.
