Container a and b hold 11,875 liters of water altogether. Container b holds 2,391 liters more than container a holds. How much water does container a hold?

Sagot :

To find the answer we have to create system of equation and substitute b from second eq to the first.
[tex] \left \{ {{a+b=11875} \atop {a+2391=b}} \right. a+a+2391=11875[/tex]
Now we have to solve eq
2a+2391=11875  /-2391 both sides
2a=9484   /:2
a=4742
Now we can back substitute to second eq and find value of b
b=4742+2391
b=7133
Its the result
[tex] \left \{ {{a=4742} \atop {b=7133}} \right. [/tex]
