Cuneiform was the writing system used around 3400 BC. Its letters were in the form of wedge shaped marks. It is one of the oldest form of writing and is older than the Egyptian hieroglyphics. this script contained 600 to 1000 characters for writing. Sumerian and Akkadin.  

In Mesopotamia 90 percent of the people had no knowledge of how to read and write. Only Scribes were capable of reading and writing, they were ion the higher levels in the social order.
