To preserve the balance between slave State and Free States

Further Explanations:

Compromise of 1850 was collection of five bills passed by United States congress in 1850.There was a political conflict between Slave states and Free States on the authority of territories captured in Mexican- American war. The compromise was mediated by Democratic senator Stephen Douglas and Whig senator Henry Clay under the supervision of President Millard Filmore.

The principal reason behind the conflict was that the southern part wanted to expand slavery to the newly conquered lands but were opposed by the northerners. The Texas claim complicated the conflict more and intercepted the passing of organic acts that laid emphasis on creating classified territorial government for the territory conquered in Mexican- American War

The prevalent solution adopted in the 1850 compromise was that to pass on sizeable part of land claimed by Texas states to the Federal Government. Territory of New Mexico and Territory of Utah were allowed to decide their fate of being slave territory or free territory.
