Following the American victory at the Battle of Saratoga the French decided that it would seek to build an alliance with the Americans and enter the Revolutionary War (C). The French sought to weaken the British in this conflict and also to exact vengeance for the French defeat during the Seven Year's War. From this point further France entered the Revolutionary War, originally mostly in a maritime fashion later taking more of a land presence in the conflict.
