In 1833, South Carolina threatened to secede from the Union if (A) Congress continued to raise protective tariffs. Southerners were angered by the increases in protective tariffs that were included in the Tariff of 1832 and the 1828 Tariff of Abominations. As a result South Carolina threatened to secede and a political compromise was struck which was called the Compromise Tariff of 1833.
