Yes your genes are inherited from your parents. This is because when the egg and sperm meet, and the egg add sperm meet, and the egg is ferlized and the offspring (childs) cells cells are formed by the union.
Meiosis is basically where your cells chromosomes are doubled, then split, and then halved. You are then resulted with a perm or egg, depending on your sex. Because through the process, the cell is doubled, split and then halved, we are left with half as many chromosomes as we have in a regular cell. This is so that when the sperm and egg meet, we have a the original amount of chromosomes for 1 cell. These chromosomes are what affect your body's make up - half from your mum and half from your dad.
