Since you know that this is clearly a ratio what you need to find is that there are a ratio of females of males which is 1:6.

We can do it like this to create this equation in our problem.

M(males)
F(females)

M+F=total

6F+F=total

7F=total

F=(1/7)total

Which means that there are 7 from every student which leads to us bringing that there is 1 female and 6 male.
1 out of 7 is based as 1/7.
