While this may seem counterproductive because the amount of buses or trains or boats burning fossil fuels increases, by doing this more people will have easy access to public transportation and it has been shown that public transportation is more effective in reducing fossil fuel usage per head. Providing more options of public transportation will increase their usage and therefore will over decrease the amount of fossil fuel burned by individuals which will overall decrease fossil fuels burning.
