In 1956, Saddam Hussein joined its first political party in Iran, the ABSP, teh Arab Ba'ath Socialist Party. There, he was very active in participating in demonstrations against the Iraqi government. He even participated in a complot to kill Qasim, the Primer Minister.

Saddam Hussein quickly escalated the hierarchy of the party and in 1963 is part of the leadership group that controls the party. He was sent to prison from 1964 to 1966, escaping in 1967.  Saddam Hussein is named vice president in 1968 of the Revolution Command Council, and one year later, he became vice-chairman of the RCC. Finally, in 1979, he became President of Iraq
