In the 20th century, there were several minority groups that faced tremendous struggles with gaining the same civil rights as an traditional “American.” For example, African Americans and women both faced immense discrimination for much of America’s history.

African Americans were limited in employment, housing, and political say. There was also an extreme lack of employable and enjoyable jobs for those with African origins, many included hard labor for a very little wage. Women were not able to own land, hold certain jobs, and most importantly, not able to vote.

After many protests and struggles, amendments were passed to limit bias and discrimiation against these minorities. The Fourteenth amendment allowed every American to earn the same protections and rights under the Constitution.
