This country was built upon the idea that citizens should be guaranteed the ability to speak freely, and say whatever they please without fear of the government's intervention. This is why many are allowed to speak out against the government and speak up when they disagree with a bill or act. If this ability was taken away, Americans would no longer be free in almost every other aspect of the first amendment as well. The freedoms to assemble and petition both also have to do with speaking out against the government, and therefore would be restricted as well if the freedom of speech were to be taken away.
