his wife requested had two different types. So to be safe, he bought 2 cans of
regular cat food, and 2 cans of wheat based cat food, and spent $12.80. When he got home, his wife kept the regular cat food and sent Jerry back to buy 3 more cans of regular cat food, but return the wheat based. His total for his second trip was only 1.95. What was the cost of each can?

so what i did was use the elimination method by setting up 2 equations r is for regular food and w is for wheat food

3r-2w=1.95

2r+2w=12.80

the way this method works is simply combining like terms into one equation

if you notice, the wheat food cancels out so we end up with

5r=14.75

then dividing 14.75 by 5 gets you r

r=2.95

you then plug in r back into one of the equations from before

2(2.95)+2w=12.8

then you solve for w

5.9+2w=12.8

2w=6.9

w=6.9/2
