The immediate cause of the War of 1812 were a series of economic sanctions taken by the British and French against the US as part of the Napoleonic Wars and American outrage at the British practice of impressment, especially after the Chesapeake incident of 1807. This hurt the US  more than Britain hurt them , angering the American citizens and providing their full support to War Hawks in Congress like Henry Clay. In 1812, with President Madison in office, Congress declared war against the British.The war began with an attack on Canada, both effortlessly trying to gain land and to cut off British supply lines to Tecumseh's Indian confederation, which had always troubled the US. The original battles in Canada were not as easy as the War Hawks planned and thought it was going to be, and the American soldiers who mind you had NO experience were pushed into the field rapidly. Actually, only by high luck and and virtues did the naval victories clutch  by Oliver Hazard Perry on Lake Erie and Thomas Macdonough on Lake Champlain
