The Second Crusade was the second major crusade launched from Europe as part of a Catholic holy war against Islam. The Second Crusade began in 1147 in response to the capture of Edessa in 1146 by the forces of the Seljuk Turks. Edessa had been founded during the First Crusade and was one of its major successes. The Second Crusade was launched by Pope Eugene III, and was the first of the crusades to be led by European kings, namely Louis VII of France and Conrad III of Germany. The armies of the two kings took separate routes across Europe to Anatolia.
