De Tonti founded the Arkansas Post after La Salle’s death because, it says after La Salle died several men continued to explore, De Tonti was one of those men.  Then De Tonti Stayed in an area we now know as Missouri, and after not hearing from Le Salle for 2 years he headed south.  Then in 1686 he settled near the confluence of the Arkansas and Mississippi Rivers. Here he established the first permanent European settlement in Arkansas called the Arkansas Post.
