Hiram Bingham was an American explorer and archaeologist who studied the Inca city of Machu Picchu. He organized an expedition and departed to Peru in 1911 to uncover Vilcabamba, the mythical Inca city, which Bingham believed it was Machu Picchu.

In 1912 his expedition excavated the Inca city of Machu Picchu, although Bingham continued speculating about Vilcabamba and other sites which were more similar to the lost city.
