I think Americans resented immigrants because they were Jewish or Catholic. Most of the immigrants were poor and unskilled. But, if you take a close look at our history and even the world today, immigrants helped and are helping to build America. The only thing they are asking for in return is a piece of land for their family. Better jobs so that they can have money to buy food and clothes for their wives and children. And religious and political freedom without being judged. The Americans also feared the immigrants would be willing to work for a very low wage. They also feared that the newcomers, or the immigrants,  would take away jobs from other Americans.
