Atomic weapons are very dangerous to this day. This is especially seen in Nagasaki and Hiroshima as their cities were decimated and caused many civilians who were not part of the war to die. To further add to this, the Cold War left many countries vulnerable when USSR had also gotten atomic weapons. This led to many close calls with atomic weapons to the point where one man had the choice to nuke the USA as they had thought that nuclear war had already started. If a nuclear war were ever to start, this would cause a nuclear winter, possibly causing the extinction of humans.
For Cold War, the tension was very high with America and USSR. If one move were ever to go wrong, it could cause nuclear destruction. However, a doctrine was created called M.A.D (Mutually Assured Destruction) which is a military theory where if one side was met with a nuclear attack, the other side would follow up with a counter attack meaning nuclear annihilation. This detered both the USSR and America from ever firing nukes at each other.
