Throughout history, humanity has strived to create weapons which allowed for one to be able to murder their enemies not only quickly, but also efficiently. In the history of the United States, the gun culture that has been apart of this nation has no exception. In 1791, the Constitution of the United States was passed, which included, within our natural rights that, quote: "[a] well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." [emphasis added]. However, the US has, as any country, has proponents who believe that the old should be replaced by the new, and that the right to bear arms has already lost it's place within today's world, and should be removed. However, I believe that it is not the case, and that the 2nd Amendment still plays an important role even today, and that it should be needed more in today's world than before.
Opponents of the 2nd Amendment must understand that the 2nd Amendment is not simply about whether a person should legally be able to own a firearm or a weapon, but rather that it is more of a security. The Founding Fathers of this country knew that, from their experience, that weapons are needed for one to defend their own values and persons. After all, many of them asked for their fellow colonists to take up arms to fight for their independence from the British government. The usage of firearms throughout the history of the US, not only for the protection of colonists during the Independence War, but also for protection during the Age of the Manifest Destiny, throughout the numerous wars that the US fought, as well as the civil upheavals of the days, show the need for US citizens to own firearms. The arguments that, as the US is a "civilized country", there may not be a need for large quantities of firearms privately owned in the US, but now we need it more than ever. The US constitution sets aside the right for the US population to overthrow their government if it takes away from their natural rights and oppresses them, and the need for weapons and equipment that are on par with the US military is needed to be able to protect their own rights. After all, the 2nd Amendment is the security for all other rights listed for the common person.
Should the US continue to keep the 2nd Amendment? Yes, US citizens should not only strive to protect the 2nd Amendment, but also appreciate the value in which it brings. It is, after all, the security for all their other rights, as well as their security for their freedom as a whole. Without such a right, the US government can slowly but surely take control of US citizens, and impose the rule of the few elites on the many. To be able to defend their natural given rights is expedient for the continuation of the United States of America as how we know of it today.
