The narrator tells us of when he was only a child and used to go swimming in a river at the arroyo with his friend. They found out that every third, fourth, or fifth day, the water would be filled with excrement because of a sewage plant upstream. Since there was no way to know immediately just by looking at the water, and the day was never a sure thing, they would end up swimming in the filthy water, and then rushing home to take a shower.
