I would describe Frank Crowe as determined, hardworking, innovative, and ambitious without regard to the well-being of his workers. Some of the innovations that made the construction of the Hoover Dam possible were giant mobile drilling rigs, a sophisticated cable system, and cooling pipes. The mobile drilling rigs allowed there to be up to 30 men per rig that were drilling tunnels that were used to divert the river. This sped up the normal drilling process by 10 times. The cable system helped distribute the cement to fill up the dam quickly. Finally, the cooling pipes put in the cement served as a way to help the cement cool. This sped up the cooling times, as estimates of the cement cooling without them was 125 years.
The construction of the Hoover Dam and Mount Rushmore were significant because they both served as important symbols to the American people. The Hoover Dam gave Americans a sense of the impossible, since it was the first concrete dam in history and the world's largest hydroelectric power producing facility. Mount Rushmore was a symbol of pride in the country and a symbol of faith in its future as well as it's past. These projects affected the U.S economy by creating jobs for workers. In the case of the Hoover Dam, workers also contributed to the economy in Las Vegas since that was a popular place for them to go after work.
The Dust Bowl took place because of a variety of environmental conditions including, an extended drought, high winds, and loss of topsoil. The overuse of the land by people contributed to the Dust Bowl as well. Looking back, I think the Dust Bowl might have been prevented if people would have come up with measures to try to not overwork the land, but the fact that other environmental factors played an important role suggests that the Dust Bowl was unavoidable.
The boxing matches between Joe Louis and Max Schmeling were big stories internationally because Joe symbolized democracy and Max symbolized totalitarianism. The boxing in the arena was seen as a battle of ideologies. When Joe won his second match with Max it was a comeback America especially needed.
