The founder of Mary Land colony was Catholic at the time when England has domination of Anglican Church. Still, Maryland was a colony of England and the church of England have the official status. The puritan soon overpopulated it and when the Maryland toleration act was passed it gave the tolerance to the Catholics.  The Act gives freedom of worship to all Trinitarian Christian and the death penalty to those who don't believe in Jesus.
