Sophie choose his son to be sent to the labour camp because she knew that there is more chance of survival of her son as compared to her daughter in that camp. She also wanted him alive as he is favourite to her as compared to her daughter. Her daughter can't survive the hard life of labour camp so dying is good for her in order to safe from the hardships of life.
