A paragraph can be defined as a formatting technique used typically for separating the main ideas of an essay into a sets of logical units, in order to enhance or facilitate a reader's ability to follow a writer’s argument.
In English literature, paragraphs are primarily used in breaking an essay’s main ideas into manageable but logical units. Therefore, each paragraph contained in an essay or writeups focuses on just an idea from the main idea and illustrates logical, coherent and succinct sentences to enhance the idea. In order to achieve the above, it is important to always consider this three (3) elements;
1. Purpose of writing.
2. Tone or attitude.
3. Your intended audience.
In a nutshell, as a writer you should ensure your paragraphs are related to the main idea (topic), well organized, engaging, coherent and succinct. Also, all paragraphs should start on a new line in the essay.
Furthermore, paragraphs can be developed through the use of the following text structures;
a. Comparison and Contrast: it used for the comparison of two or more things to show similarities and differences i.e how they are alike and different.
b. Cause and Effect: it gives the relationship between two things or events in which an occurrence one (cause) leads to the occurrence of another (effect). Signal words such as consequently, because, as a result, therefore, due to, since, etc.
c. Problem and Solution: it describes a problem and proffers a solution using signal words such as dilemma, solve, problem, etc.
d. Persuasive: its main purpose is to inform an action in the minds of the potential readers by accepting all or part of the ideas, views, or perception being expressed by the writer. Thus, the aim or goals of the writer is to convince the readers (audience) to accept his or her point of view, perspective, ideas or opinions.
