It started as a fluke, but ended as a success story. Ella Fitzgerald wanted to dance, but it seems she was born to sing. As a teenager, she entered a talent contest and planned to do a dance number. A pair of sisters took the stage right before Fitzgerald was to perform and did an amazing dance act. Intimidated by their phenomenal performance, Fitzgerald made a last-minute decision to sing instead of dance.Her performance won her first place in the contest and a warm reception from the audience. Fitzgerald had a hard decision to make. She sadly bid good-bye to her dancing career and began exploring the possibility of making her living as a singer. Despite being shy and often filled with self-doubt about her voice, Fitzgerald persisted and slowly began making a name for herself as a singer. Fitzgerald continued to perform with Webb's band and took over as bandleader for three years after Webb died in 1939.As a solo artist, Fitzgerald worked with most of the great jazz lyrists and composers of the 20th century, including Cole Porter, Duke Ellington, and George Gershwin.
