Germany was waiting to attack Russia and since a Serbian (whose nation was an ally to Russia) killed an Austrian (whose nation was loyal to Germany) they had their excuse. One of the main reasons a global war broke out was because all the countries of Europe were picking sides with each other raising the tensions. If one country were to do one thing that was out of place, many of this countries enemies could attack them causing the first countries allies to attack back. This left many countries involved in a war because they felt they had to be true to their promises.
