In 1892 Ellis Island was opened for the purpose of an immigrant station. It was suppose to be opened for more than 60 years but. closed 1954. Ellis Island was near the open banks of Hudson River between New York City and New Jersay. Before Immigrants went through New York they would have had to go to Ellis Island before they were let in. Immigrants would have to be checked for any diseases or anything that you had like trachoma, tuberculosis, pregnancy, and any mental disability. If you had any the things listed or if you were positive that you these signs ((checked by the doctors on Ellis Island)) you would have had to stay there in the hospital rooms.
