Some of the most acclaimed works of the 20th  century came out of the struggles of the 1930s and early 1940s. As America shifted into a post-war society, challenges arose that were different from those of the first half of the century. Some had been issues for a long time but gained fresh energy after the war, such as racial segregation and inequality. Other issues were new, such as rebellion of young people against conventional culture. All of these challenges, though, paved the way for new writers and thinkers to take the stage and be the voices of the postmodern American culture.Although politically the Cold War—the rivalry between the United States and the U.S.S.R.—and the threat of Communist takeover were the most urgent matters of the 1950s, the Civil Rights Movement was gaining momentum.  Despite that black soldiers had laid down their lives for their country during World War II, they're segregated from their fellow white soldiers and treated as inferiors throughout the war. Life on the home front was not much different. Although some segregation banned during the 1940s (such as at graduate schools), schools, theaters, streetcars, and various other public facilities, particularly in the South, still separated black Americans from their white neighbors.
