The Sumerians built the world’s earliest high cultures. History generally looks at some Sumerian inventions––writing, the school system, irrigation, complex architecture––as positive. But with larger societies came some negative traits, too. Bureaucracy, taxes, and social stratification––including the invention of slavery––originated in Sumer as well. In your opinion, is it possible to build a complex civilization without social hierarchy? Explain your reasoning.

Why is it not possible?

A society is one that is govern with laws and order. the use of social hierarchy is known to be a kind of a check and balance in the society.

The society is not in a free world where you can do what you like and so it is not possible to create  civilization without social hierarchy.

Note that by giving people room to make decisions for themselves can hinder the possibility for a classless society but it does not really exist in all parts of the world. Hierarchical and territorial dominance is seen as some vital aspect of nature that increases evolution.

Therefore, In my honest response, it is not it possible to build a complex civilization without social hierarchy.
