In nature, living organisms have to navigate conditions (such as severe heat, extreme cold, drought, predation, food scarcity, etc) surrounding their existence in order to survive.
The theory of evolution states that as they conquer these conditions, their behavior and physical abilities, and traits evolve and become efficient at doing so.
These traits are then passed on to their offspring via the process of reproduction.
The process by which their physical qualities change to survive their environment is called adaptation.
Those who are unable to evolve are terminated by the harsh conditions of nature. Those who are unable to pass their abilities to survive to their offspring also get wiped off. Those who adapt and reproduce are deemed to be selected naturally to survive hence the term - Natural Selection.
Hence natural selection is a component of evolution.
Evolutionists have stated that the Giraffe is an example of an animal that evolved. It developed a long neck to enable it to reach for food far off the ground and on trees when there was a condition that wiped off shrubs available for them to graze on easily off the ground.
As giraffes with longer necks grazed and fed well, they passed on the gene to their offspring whilst those without adequately long necks got terminated by nature.
Another example is given in the attached picture. The animal in the picture is a desert dragon lizard adapting the color of its skin to blend to its environment in order to escape being spotted by desert hawks that prey on them.
