Sample answer for Edmentum
Answers will vary. Essays should explain the American justification for dropping the atomic bomb on Japan and the consequences for the Japanese people. Essays should also state an opinion about whether using the bomb was justified. The opinion should be supported by examples from the readings and lesson. For example, an essay might point to estimates of expected casualties from a conventional assault on Japan. Or it might note how targeting civilians is considered a war crime.
My answer:
I believe it was kind of justified, although it may not have been the best decision to make at the time. It was a choice between allowing more American soldiers to die and killing innocent civilians in Hiroshima. People who join the army, in my perspective, understand that they may die fighting for their nation, but the people of Japan were just going about their daily lives when a bomb decided to detonate in their city. Why couldn't they do it in the desert? They had to test it because "powerful interest groups couldn't continue to blindly support the high costs of the Manhattan Project."
Some argue that it was done to demonstrate the US's full strength, while others argue that it was done to counter the Japanese "threat." The problem is that we murdered many innocent people who had nothing to do with the conflict in that explosion. If the bomb had exploded in a military camp, it could have been justifiable, but dropping the bomb on Hiroshima, in my opinion, was not. Killing individuals, even if it is for the sake of fighting for your nation, is not justifiable.
