The weakness of the national government under the Articles of Confederation became concerning to southern planters and New England merchants when a series of slave revolts swept through the southern states and overthrew a number of local governments in the summer of 1783.
Although the slave trade had been in existence for many years and most indigenous Americans were profiting from it, there came a time when the slaves in the Southern states started a revolt which saw other people join them.
The National Government were unable to crush the slave rebellion and the abolitionists who wanted an end to slavery in the South which resulted in the overthrow of several local governments, and showed their weakness.
