March 31, 1877: I just heard about them removing the military control over the South I'm surprised, but I’m not completely against it. I figure maybe the South has learned from the past. Maybe this will be good and we’ll reach equality and let the past be the past. 

April 3, 1877: I just heard about the home-rule agreement. This is very bad; it basically means that everything that I, no, we planned for as far as equality goes in the south is ruined.  

April 4, 1877: Southerners have promised to “recognize the civil and political equality of blacks.” yet keep passing Black Codes, and enforcing segregation.
