They traveled across the seas for trade and later they traveled to spread their civilization. After their colonies became big cities they started to spread their culture to the people that they traded with.  

The estimated time period of Phoenicians is 1550 BCE to 300 BCE and their important contribution to the world is said to be the alphabetical system.
