*In Chapters 8 and 9, several characters in Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry react to acts of intimidation or harassment by white members of the community. Compare and contrast the reactions between two of these characters: Cassie, Mama, Papa, Stacey, and Mr. Morrison. Explain why you think the two sets of reactions differ.

Sagot :

Cassie decides not to give in to racism and confront the person who is being racist with her. Papa, on the other hand, decides to give in to racism if it's necessary to protect his family.

We were able to arrive at this answer because:

  • Papa has a great sense of responsibility to his family.
  • He recognizes that white people have greater influence and privileges in society and that this allows them to exploit and abuse black people.
  • He doesn't want his family to suffer any kind of aggression from whites and for that reason he decides to give in to racism, acting the way the whites want so that his family doesn't suffer.
  • Cassie, however, acts differently. That's because after she suffered racism from a classmate, she decided to confront, fight and threaten the girl, in addition to demanding that the girl apologize.

The ways in which the two characters acted show different aspects of how people react to racism. However, in both situations, racism appears as a very negative element.

Importantly, "Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry," tells the story of a family of black farmers who need to fight racism to maintain their land and their position in society.

Answer:

Papa had a very severe accident, he was riding home on a wagon that we find out was clearly sabotaged, and it crashed. Papa did not have any severe injuries, so he started to repair the wagon. While he was doing this, a truck came by and shot him. The bullet scraped his head so it was not fatal. And the wagon could not stay up so it fell on his leg. Stacey feels very responsible for papa's legs, he was the one who was holding the horses carrying the wagon, and when he let go that is when the wagon fell on papa's legs. L.T. Morrisons reaction was sudden. He jumped into action immediately defending papa, he even broke one of the white mens back. There is a big difference between these two reactions, but it is understandable. Stacey is a 13 year old boy, and Mr. Morrison is a huge grown man. Mr. Morrisons reaction, and Stacey's reaction are different, but Mr. Morrison probably felt bad too that he could not get to the white men before they shot papa. Both reactions fit with their personality.
