I don't know about France but in the American revolution the thing that caused it was paying high taxes to a king without any say in the government. This was a monarchy where the king had all the say in decisions while the people suffered. Without the American revolution the government could've turned from a monarchy to a dictatorship because the king was really acting like a dictator with making harsh decisions that hurt the colonists.
