1. What did you observe after spraying a mist of water under direct sunlight?
2. Explain which properties of light are observed in this activity.
3. Did you encounter any problem in doing the activity? If yes, enumerate and explain
how you overcame it.

Sagot :

This activity we see the scattering of light in all its colors, following the refraction law, in the order of the rainbow.

The greatest difficulties is adjusting the angle of the water jet to have the correct incident angle.

1) Refraction is the phenomenon of refracting light when it enters a material by the dependence of the refractive index with the wavelength, the refraction is

                 [tex]n_i \ sin \ \theta_i = n_r \ sin \ \theta_r[/tex]

Where [tex]n_i[/tex] and [tex]n_r[/tex] are the refractive indices of the two media, incident and refracted, respectively, tai are the angles with respect to the normal to the surface.

When we launch a water jet, for example from a hose in the shape of a fan, the sunlight that enters the jet according to this relationship is refracted at various angles, this phenomenon is called rainbows.

The light with more energy (shorter wavelength) refracts less, that is, violet light and light with lower energy (longer wavelength) refracts more, that is, red, for which we observe a spectra with the colors of the rainbow, violet, blue green yellow orange and red.

2) in this activity the law of refraction and the dependence of the refractive index with the wavelength of the incident radiation are observed.

3) There are some problems when doing this activity

  • The angle of the water jet must be adjusted to be able to observe the refraction
  • The jet water must be as fine as possible to clearly observe the phenomenon, if it is thick, a double refraction occurs through which two iris rings can be observed, it is easier to see in the air after a light rain.

In summary, in this activity we see the scattering of light in all its colors, following the  refraction law.

The greatest difficulties is adjusting the angle of the water jet to have the correct incident angle.
