Cronus, Zeus' father, had thrown up so much due to the poison that he disgorged Zeus' siblings. Their second birth made Zeus, who was the youngest, now the oldest brother amongst the siblings. After this, Zeus' siblings acknowledged his authority. They were helped by the one eyed Cyclopes and the hundred handed Hecatoncheires whom Zeus had freed from imprisonment. With this, they overthrew Cronus and the Titans during a war that lasted a decades time known as the Titanomachy.
He and his brothers than decided to share the world between themselves. Poseidon got the sea, Hades had the underworld, and Zeus obtained the sky. Zeus was soon crowned ruler of all gods and men, and is now universally referred to as Father. Zeus was quite a significant part of the culture because not only was he a god amongst men, he was also the god of gods. He freed Cyclopses, overthrew his father, and became the god to rule all gods. He showed great wit and leadership and it is understandable how he is so well known and important to Greek culture.
