I think Hrothgar does not inform Beowulf of their sightings of a second monster before Beowulf fights Grendel because:
- He does not want Beowulf to be distracted
According to the story of Beowulf, the narrator tells us a story about a strong, powerful and courageous king who comes to the aid of his friend and ally Hrothgar whose kingdom is terrorised by the monster Grendel.
When Beowulf arrives, Hrothgar shows him the devastation caused by the monster and also tries to persuade him to fight Grendel because he believes he is the only man that can defeat the monster
As a result of these events, i believe Hrothgar did not tell Beowulf about the sightings of a second monster because he did not want to distract him from his primary mission
