Populations Lab Report
Instructions: The Virtual Populations Lab is on the lesson assessment page. Gather data to
evaluate Sebastian's Snorkel Spot's claim that a new factory is polluting the coral reef. Follow
the instructions as you move through the lab and record your data and observations in the lab
report.

Procedure
During the research phase, you found that the factory is not using nutrient-removal treatment on
the water it releases. Excess nutrients in the water encourage algae growth, which can smother
coral. To monitor the water quality and health of the coral reef, you will collect data on five
factors: water clarity, dissolved oxygen levels, percentage of live coral coverage, number of
juvenile parrot fish observed and number of mature parrotfish observed.

Answer:

Populations Lab Report

 Title: Sebastian’s Snorkel Spot

Objective(s):  The objective is to monitor the conditions at the coral reef to prove the new factory is polluting the reef.

Hypotheses (more than one) :  If pollution levels increase, then the health of the coral reef will decrease.

Variables:  honestly not sure and forgot to submit the variables

-Controlled:

-Independent:

-Dependent:

Procedure:  Measure water quality surrounding the reef by taking measurements on the clarity and dissolved oxygen levels

-Measure the percent of live coral coverage

-Count the population of juvenile and mature parrotfish in the reef

During the research phase, you found that the factory is not using nutrient-removal treatment on the water it releases. Excess nutrients in the water encourage algae growth, which can smother coral. To monitor the water quality and health of the coral reef, you will collect data on five factors: water clarity, dissolved oxygen levels, percentage of live coral coverage, number of juvenile parrot fish observed, and number of mature parrotfish observed.

Data:   Record your data from the virtual lab in the data table.

Week:

Water Clarity (m) : week 0- 6 , week 1- 4, week 2- 3 , week3- 3 ,week 4- 2

Dissolved Oxygen Level (mg/L) : week 0- 14, week 1- 12, week 2- 10, week 3- 9, week 4- 9

Percentage of Live Coral Coverage (%) week 0- 35, week 1- 30, week 2- 25, week 3- 25, week 4- 20

Number of Juvenile Parrotfish week 0- 8, week 1- 7, week 2- 7, week 3- 5, week 4- 4

Number of Mature Parrotfish week 0-12, week 1- 12, week 2- 11, week 3- 11, week 4- 8

Data Analysis:

Select one abiotic factor that was monitored, either water clarity or dissolved oxygen level, and create a line graph showing the measurement of the abiotic factor over time. Then select one biotic factor that was monitored, either coral coverage, juvenile parrotfish, or mature parrotfish, and create a line graph showing the measurement of the biotic factor over time.

Insert Chart [Hint: don't forget to create a line graph to analyze your data]

I created the graph on paper and sent it to my teacher. Its pretty easy all you need to do to create is just follow the directions I made two difference graphs.

Conclusion: I hypothesized that if pollution Levels increase, then the health of the coral reef will decrease. My hypothesis turned out to be correct. After recording data over the 4 weeks at the reef everything in the reef showed to be decreasing. This was being caused by the pollution from the new factory.

Be sure to answer the following reflection questions as a summary in the conclusion of your lab report:

Was your hypothesis correct? Why or why not? Be sure to include evidence from the data you collected to support your conclusion. Yes my hypothesis was correct because as I calculated each week the pollution continues to contaminate the reef as everything in the reef decreases.

Based on your data, describe the overall trend for each of the five factors that were measured? Everything decreased.

What information do your graphs show? Describe the correlation between the two factors that you graphed. The graphs I created show the percent of coral coverage and the water clarity decrease meaning the pollution coming from the new factory is affecting the coral reef.

Questions:

Using what you have learned in the lesson and the virtual lab activity, answer the following questions in complete sentences:

Identify the abiotic and biotic factors in this lab. Water clarity and dissolved oxygen is abiotic. The biotic factors are coral coverage, juvenile parrotfish, and mature parrotfish

Describe the symbiotic relationship between each of the organisms. Water is mandatory for all the fish to live and coral helps make the habitat for the fish.

Explain how the limiting factors affect carrying capacity in each population. Without water the fish would die without coral the fish would decrease.

Explanation: I hope this helps!! Sorry its not perfect!! And obviously please reword it!!!!!!!
