Hom-ozygous tall pea plants look the same as heterozygous tall pea plants. Formulate a pollination experiment to identify whether a tall pea plant is hom-ozygous or heterozygous. Explain your answer in 3-5 sentences.

Sagot :

The experiment in question can be performed by taking into account offspring predictions based on punnet square probabilities for each plant crossing.

A punnet square is a tool used by many genetic scientists. It is a square in which the dominant or recessive alleles of each parent are placed on the outer edges and used to determine the genetic makeup of the offspring. Though incapable of providing conclusive data, the punnet square can offer probabilities as to the genetic makeup of the offspring.

We can design an experiment in which we make predictions using a punnet square based on Hom-ozygous alleles and heterozygous alleles. Then we compare the results to the probabilities for each outcome, if the correlation is within acceptable ranges we can assume that the alleles we guessed when making the punnet squares are correct. By using two Hom-ozygous plants we can guarantee 100% tall plants, and only by using two heterozygous plants can we produce a short plant.
