Slave Frederick Douglass believed that all slaves should be free, whereas slave dealer Captain Canot believed that slaves were only suitable for producing money and performing hard work. Although Douglass saw the Civil War as a war to eliminate slavery, he, like many other free blacks, pushed President Abraham Lincoln to emancipate the slaves as a way of ensuring that slavery would never exist in the United States again.
