They were devastating to the U.S. and while many of these immigrants tried to make new lives, they were often discriminated against after both events. German Americans were treated unfairly and wrongly during WWI. They were called “Huns” which is a derogatory name for the German immigrants that grew popular during this time. Their lack of support and wanting the U.S. to remain neutral contrasted with the surge of American patriotism which led to even more discrimination. Orchestras refused to play German music as well as German businesses being vandalized. To gain public support for the war, these doing were ignored by the U.S. government
