Their expedition to find gold in the region was a success. This caused the migration of thousands of whites into the Black Hills region. Over time, tensions grew greatly between the whites and the Native Americans who had occupied the territory for generations, which would culminate in the Great Sioux war of 1876 and Custer's Last Stand.
