Kaplan, “Adolescence represents an inner emotional upheaval, a struggle between the eternal human wish to cling to the past and the equally powerful wish to get on with the future”. In the story “The bicycle’’, by Jillian Horton, Hannah is going through her adolescent age which brings a lot of emotional changes in her life. Hannah was a very devoted, ignorant and hard working girl in the start of the story. When she was 15 years old she slowly changed and now wanted to be independent and didn 't like to follow the rules anymore. By the end of the story, she broke all the rules and wanted to follow her heart 's desires. Hannah was ignorant about the world around her and was only concentrated on learning the piano and dreaming about becoming a concert pianist. “[Hannah] dreamed of [herself] in flowing dresses with [her] long black hair grown out to [her] waist and a string of pearls at [her] throat”(horton.1). This shows that Hannah is living in her own world with her hopes and dreams. Hannah realized that she has a great talent and she can become a famous concert pianist one day. Hannah believed when Tant Rose said “ If [she] made a few sacrifices and worked hard [she] would be famous’’(1). Hannah was a very hard worker and by working night and day she became very good at playing the piano. Hannahs talent was shown in the story when it was said that “[she] was playing the music of Beethoven and Liszt with proficiency’’(1). Therefore all these statements show that Hannah was a very devoted ignorant and hard working girl at the start of the New age.
