- Madame Loisel is not poor at the beginning of the story, and she could very well be satisfied with her condition. However, she wants more. She wants fancy clothes and furniture.
- To attend a ball with her husband, she borrows a necklace from a wealthy friend believing it to made of diamonds. As soon as the party is over, she realizes she has lost the necklace.
- Instead of telling her friend the truth, she buys a new one to replace it. She spends 10 years of her life paying for the new necklace.
- At the end, she finally learns that the first necklace was a fake. All her struggles have been for nothing. All her vanity and materialism have only led to her ruin.
