The New England colonies have less open land than the Southern.  The southern colonies have more open lands for farming. They had better soil than the north because the soil in the north was more rocky and rocky. They were able to raise cash crops such as tobacco. While in the north, the rocky soil was not good enough to farm and raise cash crops. New England colonies depended on more manufacturing to make money. They instead raised livestock such as cows, fished, provided timber and lumber, and hunted for animal fur, which was really valuable.
