In 1405, China’s progressive attitude towards exploitation of the sea culminated in a series of naval expeditions into the South China Sea and the Indian Ocean…But China’s prominence as the world’s largest naval and maritime power was short lived. The last of seven expeditions ended in 1433; never again were naval expeditions attempted by emperors. As a result, it is tempting to dismiss these voyages as a temporary aberration of the Chinese emperor who sponsored them. To do so, however, would be to ignore the ineluctable influence of the maritime spirit on China, particularly the growing awareness of the potential of sea power to expand and control the tribute system. At the same time, the subsequent cessation of the voyages clearly highlights the equally strong force of continentalism among member of the imperial court as they attempted to steer China away from maritime pursuits.
