Texans cited items such as the lack of public education and no guarantee to a jury trial as reasons to declare independence. The Declaration of Independence was adopted on March 2, and members began signing it on March 3.
•The convention then proceeded to the writing of the constitution. The Constitution of 1836 created the plan for government for the new republic of Texas. The government created had many similarities to the U.S. Constitution. The convention also elected government officials. Lorenzo de Zavala, who was integral in Texas’s fight for independence, was elected as Vice President. Sam Houston was named commander in chief of the military forces of the republic. With the report of the approach of the Mexican army, the convention ended quickly in the early morning hours of March 17, 1836.”
